Graduate Research Scholarships in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias

The Graduate Research Scholarships will be awarded to two full-time graduate students in any faculty who are conducting research related to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). The research should be in support of projects that will significantly advance scientific and clinical knowledge, and improve the quality of life for both those with the disease and their caregivers.

Selection will be based on the applicant's potential to contribute to knowledge about Alzheimer's disease and related dementias; the quality and feasibility of the applicant's research proposal; the capability of the applicant to undertake the research, and recommendations by a faculty member who will supervise the applicant. The application deadline is August 26, 2011.

The 2010-11 Alzheimer Graduate Research Scholarships have been awarded!
Congratulations to Karim Virani and Leah Cuddy!

Karim Virani's research focuses on the causes of impaired emotional face processing in patients with Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), which consists of progressive focal atrophy of the prefrontal and temporal lobes, resulting in striking presonality and behavioral changes. The predominant focus of his research is to utilize function MRI (fMRI) to delineate the functional neural correlates of the impaired emotional face processing in patients with FTD compared to healthy age-matched controls.

Leah Cuddy's research explores the factors that regulate high-affinity choline transporter activity and trafficking. The specific aim of her research is to further characterize the mechanism by which ONOO-modulates CHT activity and function. Leah hypothesizes that ONOO-treatment in human neuroblastoma SH SY5Y cells causes an alteration in the normal trafficking of CHT and increases its movement into a degradative pathway.
