November 25, 2010 - Navigating the Road Ahead
Conference promotes awareness of Alzheimer's disease and provides practical solutions to caregivers
On November 25, 2010, the Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex presented "Navigating the Road Ahead: A Conference on Caregiving," at the London Convention Centre.
Internationally renowned neurologist Dr. Vladimir Hachinksi; and award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster, Dale Goldhawk provided the keynote addresses - both informative and hopeful.
Healthcare providers and interested caregivers from the London area had the opportunity to network, attend interactive workshops, hear dynamic speakers and tour informative exhibits during the full day conference.
"The objective of this conference is to equip London and area caregivers with the tools to make informed healthcare decisions for their family, friends or clients who are suffering from dementia,” says Betsy Little, CEO at ASLM. "We want all caregivers to know that they are not alone and there are plenty of resources available to help them get through this challenging time."
Dr. Vladimir Hachinski’s keynote topic, “Can Alzheimer’s disease be delayed,” discussed the risk factors of Alzheimer’s disease and preventative measures we can take, including exercise and diet. Dale Goldhawk’s keynote address explored dementia from a caregiver’s perspective, touching on his personal experience with his Mother and Father. Other interesting topics included a session on dementia and driving, how to better communicate with individuals with dementia, the benefits of exercise for individuals with dementia, and advocating for equitable dementia home care.
With the number of people affected by dementia continuing to rise dramatically, the role of the caregiver is becoming increasingly important. Statistics show that for every person with Alzheimer’s disease, ten to twelve others are directly impacted: family, friends, neighbours, employers and healthcare providers. Chantal Dubois, ASLM First Link™ Program Coordinator explains, “Caregivers face enormous emotional, physical and financial challenges, so it is crucial that they receive the proper support and information to better provide for their loved one.”
