Safely Home™ Alzheimer Wandering Registry
Alzheimer’s disease destroys vital brain cells in each area of the brain resulting in the loss of certain functions. A person with Alzheimer’s disease may sometimes lose their ability to recognize familiar places, communicate or remember their own name or address. The loss of these abilities can result in changes in the person's behaviour. For example, they may leave home, become confused and get lost. This behaviour can be dangerous for someone with the disease, and it is also worrisome for caregivers.
To give you peace of mind, you can register the person you are caring for with the Safely Home™ Alzheimer Wandering Registry. If you have Alzheimer's disease, you can register yourself with the program.
Safely Home™ is a nationwide program designed to help police find the person who is lost and safely return the person home . It was developed by the Alzheimer Society of Canada in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Once a person is registered, vital information is stored confidentially on a police database and information can be accessed by police anywhere in Canada and the United States.
How Safely Home™ works If a person who is registered is reported missing, the caregiver calls the local police. The police will access the computer database to find pertinent information about the registrant including personal history, physical characteristics, and locations where the person is known to visit. It is important for caregivers to keep an up-to-date photo of the registrant on hand.
When a registrant is found, the police use the identification number from the person's ID bracelet to search the computer database and determine where the person lives and who to contact.
How to Register
Registration is voluntary. Contact the Alzheimer Society of London and Middlesex or the Alzheimer Society of Canada for a registration form or download the form here. For a one-time fee of $35, the Alzheimer Society provides:
- an identification bracelet
- identification cards
- a caregiver handbook
- annual updates to the registrant’s file
|
The front of the bracelet reads:
Urgent
See Other Side The back of the bracelet shows the identification number and person's first name and reads:
Memory Loss
Call Police
Wearing the bracelet and keeping the identification cards in places such as wallets and coat pockets aid in quickly identifying people should they become lost.
